BEHAVIOUR CONSULTS
The areas that I work in are:- Edenvale and surrounds, Thornhill, Modderfontein and surrounds, Kempton Park, Lyndhurst, Kew, Glenhazel, Balfour Park, Highlands North, Sandringham, Orange Grove, Linksfield, Senderwood, Linksfield, Cyrildene, Bruma, Morninghill, Kensington, Bedfordview
The majority of reactive behaviour is fear based? Sounds crazy that the dog standing, teeth bared and growling at you like it wants to take you out is scared, right?
Well, that is how this behaviour normally happens and because the fear was not recognized and addressed the reactive behaviour became consistently worse. If you think about it makes sense. A dog does not stand there and say 'go away you scare me', it only has its body language to indicate what it feels and trouble is the dog learns that the behaviour of growling, lunging etc, gets the desired results - the fearful object/person left, therefore the behaviour is more likely to occur again!
If your dog is showing any reactive or fearful behaviour at all, please get help as soon as you can. The quicker it is attended to, the quicker it is resolved

CHANGING BEHAVIOUR
I am often asked "when do you call in a behaviourst?" and really there is not hard and fast rule here, it will depend on the circumstances which pertain to each owner and their dog. What is relevant is that the sooner help is obtained the quicker the turn around in behaviour.
For some people the dog that jumps up on all the family, friends and visitors is totally normal and acceptable - whereas another family may have young children or older family members, the dog may be large or tend to knock people over - nothing the family have tried to change the behaviour has helped - then call in for assistance.
Basically, when the behaviour is not acceptable to you and others is when you should get help. We were not all born with built in dog guidelines, so there really is nothing wrong with asking somebody to help you to change unacceptable behaviour. I deal with all behaviour problems and dealing with fear behaviour is my absolute passion.
When dealing with any behaviour concern what is the most important thing is to figure out why the behaviour happened in the first place and then to put in place the modifications required to change the behaviour, and this is exactly what I do. The manner in which I operate is as follows:-
a. Our consult can either take place at your home or at my premises in the Lyndhurst area.
b. Our first step is that I send you a comprehensive questionnaire which is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle - in that it allows me to put together all the pieces as to why the behaviour has started in the first place and allows me to start to formulate a working place specific to your own circumstances.
c. A session is then booked and we start to bring in the changes from the second I arrive. We will be working together for an hour and half and in addition to the changes we will bring in, you will gain an understanding as to why the behaviours happened in the first place - this gives you excellent tools for dealing with any problems in the future as you will have a deeper knowledge as to why dogs do the things they do.
d. Within 48 hours of our session, I send you a comprehensive summary of all we covered at the session (see options lower down)
e. I am available to you for the following two weeks by email as part of me fee, for any questions or concerns you may be experiencing, or is you just want a bit of back up - we are in this adventure of changing behaviour together!
What has to be realized is that I just do not possess a 'magic wand' - I can give you the knowledge and tools to change the behaviour - I am working with you to do this - however, YOU have to do the work. This means doing the modifications given and for you and the whole family to be completely committed and consistent - there are just no short cuts. However, if you do the above, the rewards will be evident in the dogs behaviour improving.
Financially there are two options available - R750 for your session and you are given an abridged summary of the work to be done. R950 for your session and you are given a full behavioural report.
