The holistic approach recognises that each part of an animal is intimately connected to every other part, and to the whole. An animal's health, as a whole, is intimately related to the health of every part; and the health of each part affects the health of every other part, and the animal as a whole. Beyond this, the holistic approach also recognises that individuals cannot be separated from even greater wholes - family, community, species, breed, etc. The holistic approach appreciates that Wellness is experienced when there is healthy communication between the parts, and between the parts and the whole.

The holistic view on disease is that disease is an imbalance in the whole. Disease manifests itself as symptoms in the body and mind. To only treat the symptoms, without paying attention to the underlying disharmony, will not lead to Wellness. If you can identify the underlying disharmony, then you can get to the root of the problem. Symptoms become valuable messengers when viewed this way. They tell us when the balance required for Wellness has been lost. Symptoms warn us that we need to make some adjustments if Wellness is to be regained. If the symptoms are ignored or suppressed then we could expect the disease to continue, or perhaps bigger problems to emerge later on.
